Insomnia is bad for your wallet...at least for mine. I have a tendency to browse eBay in those raw hours of the morning. And one dark morning, I found an auction for a Nikon N80 film camera, with lens, filter, 4 rolls of film, and a case. It was due to end in 20 minutes.
Who ends an eBay auction at 2:30 in the morning?
I won the auction and acquired all of the above for a grand total of $52.00! Wohoo! Score!
With the first roll of film, I learned the exposure guide on the film camera is the reverse of the Nikon digital camera. Consequently, every single shot was underexposed - tremendously so.
Now, I'm getting the hang of the camera and learning the idiosyncrasies of different film types.
It is a joy to play and experiment. Experimenting is my form of "Play Time."
Panama City Beach, FL
Most of these film photos were taken during the Annual Girls' Get-Away to Panama City Beach. We spend a week in a lovely penthouse condo that sits RIGHT on the beach. Perfect for watching sunsets, horizons, weather patterns, sea birds and marine mammals (human and otherwise), fish, an occasional manatee or sea turtle, and lots of rays.
One reason we go back there every year is because it gives me an opportunity to shoot in a different environment. The condo features quite a bit of my art and coastal photography!
Wohoo! Let's hear it for mutual benefits!
You can find out more about this condo here.
Eden Gardens State Park
Just a short drive from PCB (that's my shorthand) is this state park built around the Wesley Family Estate. The family ran the logging and sawmill industry in the very early 20th century. It was so easy to imagine back in time and realize the estate was "way the heck out in the boonies" at one time. It must have been at least a full day's drive to get there!
Breathing with the ocean
Have you ever noticed when you're sitting quietly at the beach, watching the waves, that your breathing synchronizes with the rhythm of the waves? And as you continue breathing with the ocean rhythms, your heart rate begins to slow and pulse along?
It is a mystical experience to become entrained with the rhythms of the Universe. It is the easiest form of meditation I have ever experienced. Now, THAT is bliss.
Experimenting with Black and White Film
Black and white film really gives an "in your face" lesson about the concept "figure to ground". It's about the contrast and placement of subjects between lights and darks - what makes a photo pop and grab your eye. It challenges the photographer to be deliberate in composition.
Moving on...I'll come to you
August has come and gone - so very quickly.
As we move into fall, "Holding the Bones" is picking up participants from around the country. One potential volunteer asked me to send her a plane ticket, she would be happy to participate.
No....I will come to you.
Yes, I will come to you because I want to photograph you in your local surroundings, in a location that supplies a back story to your wisdom.
Please remember to share information about "Holding the Bones".
Do you know a wise woman over sixty who would like to share her wisdom? I would like to meet her!
Thanks for reading. And please share to your social media.
Expect the Best. Anything else is an adventure.
